Goal:

Reduce suicides in Lorain County, Ohio


Objective:

By December 31, 2027, decrease the average 3-year rate of suicide in Lorain County from 14.89 deaths per 100k (2022-2024) to 13.5 deaths per 100k average from 2025-2027.

Strategy 1:

Provide information

Activity 1.1

Develop and implement 988 messaging specific to with special focuses for LGBTQ+, and black youth, resulting in a minimum of 3000 pieces distributed and 10,000 digital

impressions by December 2027 (Via cars, churches, schools, Out of the Darkness walk).






Activity 1.2

Develop and implement 988 messaging specific to the older adult population in Lorain County, resulting in 5000 impressions by December 2027.






Activity 1.3

Develop relationships with 3 local Veteran Service Organizations to provide 988 signage specific to veterans by December 2025.






Activity 1.4

Develop a collaborative safe storage campaign in partnership with local law enforcement, similar to “Have you checked your gun locks?”, resulting in 5000 gun

locks distributed by December 2027.






Activity 1.5

Implement Man Therapy Campaign in the county, resulting in 50 screenings by December 2027.






Activity 1.6

Develop and distribute 1000 pieces of literature to at least 3 firearm retailers in the county regarding suicide crisis information and safe storage by December 2026.






Strategy 2:

Enhance Skills


Activity 2.1

Partner with 14 local school districts to train school staff on suicide prevention using one of the best practices (QPR, MHFA, or ASIST), including the new 988 crisis line by December 2027.






Activity 2.2:

Collaborate with local groups such as Bro Code to provide at least one session of Emotional CPR or QPR for black men and youth by December 2026.






Activity 2.3

All members of the coalition will be trained in suicide prevention training, such as QPR, ASSIST, CALM, and MHFA, by December 2027 and create a mechanism to track this

ongoing.







Activity 2.4

Collaborate with Everytown, LifeSide Ohio, or local firearm retailers to provide gun safety and safe storage training in the community, resulting in 2 trainings by December

2026.






Activity 2.5

Provide 4 CALM trainings, prioritizing veterans by December 2027.






Activity 2.6

Identify 5 senior serving entities to train in QPR (staff and recipients of services), resulting in 15 trainings by June 2027.






Activity 2.7

Launch Black Girl Think Tank by December 2026.







Activity 2.8

Partner with 14 local school districts and community mental health agencies serving school districts to train them in the crisis response model, PREPaRE, in order to provide countywide coordinated crisis response and postvention by December 2027.






Strategy 3:

Provide support

Activity 3.1

Develop a social media chair position for the coalition that will assist in consistent digital engagement with the goal of appointment by September 2025.







Activity 3.2

In collaboration with local groups such as Thrive and Heart and Soul, support 2 “neighbor nights/community conversations” in communities with high need, including

Lorain and Elyria City, by December 2026.







Activity 3.3

Collaborate with the Mad Factory, Lorain County LGBTQ Taskforce, and Men of Courage to enhance mentoring opportunities through training, funding, and/or referral support for populations at high risk, including LGBTQ+ youth and black men/youth by

December 2027.






Activity 3.4

Develop formalized collaboration and communication, like an MOU with middle school collaborations- United Way (231 Go) and the coalition to increase support for suicide

prevention with youth in the county by December 2025.






Strategy 4:

Reduce Barriers/ Enhance Protection

Activity 4.1

Create an easily accessible database that lists behavioral health prevention training opportunities for the county by October 2026.







Activity 4.2

In partnership with Public Health, MHARS, and the Rural Response Network, support the development, implementation, and promotion of Recovery Friendly Workplaces, resulting in 15 workplaces being designated by December 2027.






Activity 4.3

Partner with the Youth Advisory Committee of the Urban League and Children and Family First Council to provide insight and direction on coalition initiatives and also

develop a pipeline of members to engage in the coalition.







Activity 4.4

Coalition will create a subcommittee to work on effective referral pathways in the county, update resource directories with accurate information, and then find a platform to keep the resource directory updated. Potential collaborators to invite to the subcommittee: Include United Way 211, El Centro (Lorain County Navigator), Riveon Crisis Services, Riveon Prevention Services, MRSS, LCCS, LCJFS, Lorain Co Juvenile Court representative, Public Health, Bd of DD, ESC Wellness Coordinator,

Gathering Hope House.






Strategy 5:

Provide incentives

Activity 5.1

In partnership with local firearm experts, develop a free storage site for firearms for individuals in crisis by December 2027.






Activity 5.2

Develop and implement a coalition member recognition program that encourages continued support and engagement with the coalition by December 2025.






Strategy 6:

Change the Physical Design


Activity 6.1

Partner with Metroparks and other local parks systems to update current mindfulness walk at Amhurst Park and work to expand to place permanent 988 crisis information signage in at least 1 additional park in the county by December 2027.






Strategy 7:

Develop or revise policies

Activity 7.1


Activity 7.2

Define procedure for advocacy opportunities including but not limited to writing letters, attending State advocacy days, etc. by December 2025.






Work with at least 3 senior centers, rehabilitation services, home health care agencies, assisted living, etc. in the county to institute suicide prevention training as part of their

orientation with new staff by December 2027.
