💙 A special shout-out to Marla and the Rural Response Network for helping spread awareness and honoring the memory of our fallen neighbors.
On Sunday, August 31, please join the Lorain County Opioid Action Team and community partners for a Resource Fair & Recovery Movie Night in memory of the 62 lives lost to accidental overdose in Lorain County in 2024.
📍 LCCC Commons
⏰ 5:30–9:00 PM
🎬 Featuring the film Unguarded + resource tables with treatment info, recovery support, Narcan kits & more.
This event is free and open to the public. Together, we remember, we learn, and we lift each other up. 💜OCS Resilience Coordinator Marla Brewer plants 62 purple flags in honor of people who died due to overdose last year in Lorain County. This display can be seen at the corner of Route 58 and Lorain Street in front of First Church in Oberlin, as well as in front of the Cooper Community Resource Center, 500 E. Lorain St. The Rural Response Network, for which Marla is the Oberlin community coordinator, puts up purple flags each year in observance of International Overdose Awareness Day, which is Aug. 31. The good news is that fatal overdoses have declined over the past several years in Lorain County and dropped off steeply last year:
• In 2021, there were 143 overdose deaths.
• In 2022, there were 126 overdose deaths.
• In 2023, there were 119 overdose deaths.
• In 2024, there were 62 overdose deaths.
Marla has worked hard to address this crisis. In her role with RRN, she has distributed free Narcan and fentanyl test strips, talked with many at-risk people and family members about resources, held educational talks, and helped local pharmacies get warnings about the risk of opioid addiction to people with prescriptions.
